Among all of the new openings recently in South Florida, one that really whets our appetites is Rhino Doughnuts & Coffee in Lauderdale By The Sea. Located on Commercial Boulevard, this trendy and modern donut shop is like nothing in the area. While most donut shops look as though they haven’t changed for the past 30 years, the decor and vibe at Rhino is showing that they know how to keep up with the times. Having amazing donuts doesn’t hurt, either.
We stopped by Copper Blues, the newest bar and restaurant to be opening at City Place in West Palm Beach. They’ll be quietly holding a soft-open tomorrow night (Wednesday, May 7th) and plan on their hard open for this weekend to meet the demands of the large crowds. We stopped by during their last day of construction to see how things were shaping up. We weren’t left disappointed.
Just shy of its second birthday (they opened on May 10, 2012 – and they will be celebrating), we had the opportunity to explore Due South Brewing Co. in Boynton Beach at opening, on a Tuesday. Noon during the week isn’t the busiest of times; but that’s the way that we prefer it when we have our camera in our hands.
TooJay’s Gourmet Deli’s seem to be everywhere in South Florida. Within a 30-minute radius there are 10+ to choose from, so no matter what county you live in, you’ll never be far away. Started back in 1981 in Palm Beach, TooJay’s takes the “Jay” from both of the co-founders’ names (Jay Katzenberg and Jay Brown). The TooJay’s that we recently visited is located in the Polo Club Shoppes in Boca Raton just near the ritzy Polo Club residences.
Fresh seafood, a wonderful atmosphere and an even better happy hour bar menu collide at City Fish Market in Boca Raton. For years we’ve been hitting up this spot, attached to the Hilton Boca Raton Suites, on Glades Road, and recently returned to take pictures of the restaurant and some of their delicious seafood dishes.
Delray Marketplace in Delray Beach is a new-ish outdoor center with a bevy of shopping and dining options serving residents of Delray Beach and those in nearby Boca Raton and Boynton Beach. Restaurants are currently open (see our past mentions of Burt & Max’s and The Grind Cafe) and also still in the build-out phase as of this time. We can expect a few more to open their doors as the season moves on. One of the popular spots that you will find, right now, is Shula Burger, Don Shula’s fast-casual entry in the hottest segment in the country right now; burgers and fries.
A great spot in Palm Beach Gardens, just on the border with Jupiter, Burger Bar is serving up two great experiences to customers. First, it’s an excellent bar with an even better Ladies Night (ladies drink certain drinks for free), and secondly, the handcrafted burgers created by Chef Matt Miller, who has been with Burger Bar since its inception, are intoxicating and bursting with flavor.
Self-serve yogurt spots are a dime-a-dozen in South Florida. There are many franchised brands as well as stand-alones and we can think of a dozen locations within a few mile radius. We were intrigued when walking past Eco Yogurt Lounge in Boca Raton because, unlike most yogurt spots, this location was super-trendy and modern on the inside. Our only regret was that our visit was at opening, in the daytime. As a result we weren’t able to extract the sheer beauty of the wall’s changing colors that are experienced at nighttime.
